Let’s talk about where the ads on your phone come from, and how you’re treated differently by them.

First, let’s take Quick Apps as an example:

  2. The app secretly clicking on ads itself

But these were all just speculations, always lacking concrete evidence. So, after analyzing packet capture data and reading developer documentation, I found that things aren’t as complicated as they seemed.


Quick Apps are different from regular ad-jumping apps

Regular ad-jumping apps are intercepted by the system, and a pop-up asks for confirmation.

However, Quick App jumps are set independently, meaning they jump by default if you haven’t configured them. Wait, how do apps receive these Quick App ads? (Calling out a certain Thunder download app)

Nowadays, apps don’t need to pull ads themselves; instead, they integrate ad SDKs, and ads are pushed by the SDKs.

PS: Frequently Asked Questions#

Why do Quick App settings and features vary across different phone brands?#

The Quick App Alliance only unifies technical specifications; the actual implementation is up to the major system manufacturers. This means manufacturers can choose to follow them, not follow them, disable specific features, or open up special interfaces.

Why aren’t any Quick Apps mentioned in the National Cybersecurity Notification Center’s reports?#

Virtual machine apps are deemed forensic or reverse engineering environments by manufacturers, directly shutting down all commercial ad logic.

Two, What are the common risk control rules built into ad SDKs?#

(They don’t just detect individual apps, but also various system fingerprints)#

As long as the phone has packet capture tools, virtual machines, permission auditing, or evidence preservation/rights protection apps#

  1. Some ad SDKs will automatically:
  2. Force skippable splash ads, cancel shake-to-skip / full-screen pop-up ads
  3. Reduce ad display frequency (from high to low)
  4. Disable silent installation and third-party software bundling
  5. Stop collecting and reporting private information like location and device ID

But there are also limitations to their effectiveness:#

  1. Risk control is most obvious only for domestic small and medium-sized developers, standalone utility apps, and cracked/repackaged/modified apps;
  2. Mainstream apps from big companies like WeChat, Douyin, and Taobao only slightly reduce non-compliant ads, but won’t completely shut down compliant commercial ads.
  3. Pure rogue or virus apps won’t care about you

But don’t ad SDKs all have to comply with advertising laws?

Take the Ocean Engine ad SDK, for example. Ads are configured by advertisers in the Ocean Engine backend, where they can set up landing pages (i.e., web pages). Ocean Engine’s official AI says that “compliant” JS can be embedded. So, in such a long chain, where exactly did things go wrong? I really don’t know.

Don’t ask me why I don’t actually verify it; testing requires an enterprise user.

Three, How to distinguish between high-net-worth users and low-spending groups by getting phone models?#

It’s simple: by looking at the phone model and price, you can differentiate between rich/poor/consumerists/low-desire individuals/elderly/children. Combined with app package names, you can also identify approximate regions, work situations, marital status, income levels, making the user profile crystal clear.

Ad SDKs grab phone models and use official new phone pricing to categorize basic user tags: foldable phones and high-end flagship users are classified as high-net-worth individuals, avoiding small online loans and low-price group-buying ads, instead targeting them with high-end real estate, luxury car maintenance, private wealth management, and light luxury product marketing. Entry-level phones costing a thousand yuan and older models are deemed price-sensitive low-spending groups, significantly increasing ad fill rates and frequently pushing content like money-saving deals, flash sales, and cash loans. Old feature phones and devices adapted for large fonts are default-marked as middle-aged and elderly users. Devices frequently used for games and online education are identified as minors and student groups, with targeted ads for their respective demographics. Beyond phone models, combining IP geolocation and device usage duration can further infer the user’s city and occupation type. Then, by integrating installation records of dating and parenting apps, marital status and family structure can be pieced together, building a complete user profile to achieve differentiated pricing and ad harvesting.

  1. Change simplified Chinese to traditional Chinese (Hong Kong/Taiwan) or English. Ethnic minority compatriots can change it to Tibetan. You can keep the region as mainland China, but if you’re worried, change it to Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. This is because fewer non-simplified ad SDKs are deployed, and overseas ad delivery systems are independent of domestic simplified Chinese ad SDKs. This can significantly reduce the push of “sinking market” targeted marketing ads and avoid detailed user profile collection.

  2. Search for the overseas version of the software in the Google Play Store and replace it (foreigners don’t deploy simplified Chinese SDK ads). Overseas versions won’t have built-in domestic ad SDKs like Pangle or Tencent Ad Alliance, and lack sophisticated user segmentation ad delivery mechanisms. This will significantly reduce the number of splash screen pop-ups and incentive-based ads.

5. Root & Plugins: System-Level Ad Blocking#

Among all ad-blocking methods, this is the one I recommend the most.

Just enter a URL on your phone, and you can get rid of 95% of those pesky app ads!

DNS providers set up ad domain blacklists on their servers. Once users configure DNS on their smart devices (phones, tablets, PCs), when the device queries these ad domains, it will receive an incorrect IP (like 0.0.0.0) or a local IP, preventing ads from loading. This achieves the ad-blocking effect.

This is similar to AdGuard and AdAway’s local proxy modes, as both apps use DNS filtering for ad blocking.

And since Android 9+ comes with a Private DNS feature, instead of using apps that need to run in the background, it’s better to directly use the phone’s native DNS function for filtering.

Configuration Method:

Go to System Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS → Select ‘Private DNS provider hostname’ → Enter DNS service address

DNS filtering requires no app installation, is simple to operate, and once configured, takes effect globally across web pages and apps, consuming fewer phone resources while achieving almost the same results as apps like AdGuard and AdAway.

Pros: No app installation required, global effect on web pages and apps

Cons: A few stubborn ads might slip through, false positives can occur, sometimes slows down internet speed
